Zverev verpasst schimpfend Halbfinale in München
Alexander Zverev muss die Hoffnung auf seinen ersten Einzeltitel in dieser Saison erneut aufgeben: Der 26 Jahre alte Olympiasieger verpasste bei widrigen Bedingungen in München das Halbfinale. Der Hamburger versuchte in seinem Viertelfinalduell gegen Cristian Garin alles - musste sich aber sichtlich unzufrieden mit den äußeren Umständen dem Chilenen nach exakt zwei Stunden 4:6, 4:6 geschlagen geben. Garin nutzte seinen zweiten Matchball.
Der Weltranglistenfünfte Zverev lief bei sieben Grad und immer wieder einsetzendem Nieselregen im ersten Satz einem frühen Break hinterher und konnte den hochkonzentrierten Garin, 106. im ATP-Ranking und Turniersieger von 2019, nicht mehr abfangen.
Zverev, der selbst 2017 und 2018 auf der Anlage des MTTC Iphitos siegte, war sichtlich unzufrieden und beschwerte sich im zweiten Satz bei den Offiziellen, dass trotz Regens weitergespielt werde. "Das ist wirklich lächerlich", sagte er in Richtung des Referees: "Ich rutsche bei jedem Schritt, den ich mache."
Zverev handelte sich eine Verwarnung ein, weil er zu lange mit dem Supervisor diskutierte. Er kämpfte, fand aber nicht mehr zurück ins Match.
