Volleyball: Heynen nicht mehr Bundestrainer - Waibl übernimmt
Überraschender Wechsel bei den deutschen Volleyballerinnen: Bundestrainer Vital Heynen hat sein Amt mit sofortiger Wirkung niedergelegt, nun soll Alexander Waibl das Team zu den Olympischen Spielen in Paris führen. Das teilte der Deutsche Volleyball-Verband (DVV) am Freitag mit.
"Das Angebot kam natürlich extrem überraschend", sagte Waibl, der zunächst in Doppelfunktion einen Vertrag bis Ende August unterschrieb. In der Bundesliga ist er seit 2009 für das Team des Dresdner SC tätig. "Es war immer mein Traum in Deutschland Bundestrainer zu sein, für mich ist es eine Ehre mein Land vertreten zu dürfen", sagte Waibl.
Heynen hatte die DVV-Frauen erst vor zwei Jahren übernommen und mit dem Team bis zuletzt um ein Ticket für die Olympischen Sommerspiele gekämpft. "Die Nachricht kam für uns sehr überraschend. Aufgrund seiner Verdienste für den deutschen Volleyball sind wir seinem Wunsch nachgekommen", sagte DVV-Sportvorstand Jaromir Zachrich: "Wir bedauern seine Entscheidung sehr - gerade zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt –, aber wir respektieren sie und wünschen ihm für seine berufliche Zukunft alles Gute."
Der Belgier Heynen war bereits von 2012 bis 2016 Trainer der deutschen Männer gewesen, ehe er Anfang 2022 zum DVV zurückkehrte und den Wechsel in den Frauen-Volleyball gewagt hatte.
Deutschland hat noch die Chance, sich über die Weltrangliste für die Sommerspiele in Frankreich zu qualifizieren.
