Bills fire coach McDermott after playoff exit: team
The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott on Monday after the team's agonizing NFL playoff loss in Denver at the weekend, the club confirmed.
Buffalo suffered a gut-wrenching 33-30 overtime defeat by the Broncos in the divisional round, the latest in a series of post-season failures under McDermott.
"Sean has done an admiral (sic) job of leading our football team for the past nine seasons," Bills owner Terry Pegula said.
"But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level. We owe that to our players and to Bills mafia," Pegula added in a statement on X.
McDermott's departure is the latest head coaching departure to rock the NFL. Since the regular season concluded earlier this month, a total of eight head coaches -- representing a quarter of the 32-team league's teams --have either resigned or been dismissed.
McDermott had been in charge since 2017 and led the Bills to the playoffs in each of the past seven seasons.
They won five straight division titles from 2020 to 2024 but never advanced beyond the AFC championship game.
The 51-year-old McDermott leaves Buffalo with a 98-50 regular-season record, but only an 8-8 mark in the playoffs.
The Bills have never won a Super Bowl despite reaching four consecutive editions in the 1990s.
