Serena Williams steht auf ihrer Abschiedstour beim WTA-Turnier in Cincinnati vor einer hohen Auftakthürde. Die 23-malige Grand-Slam-Gewinnerin aus den USA muss sich zu Wochenbeginn in der ersten Runde in einem Duell der Generationen mit US-Open-Siegerin Emma Raducanu auseinandersetzen.
Für die 40-Jährige Williams ist es das erste Duell mit der 19 Jahre alten Britin, die im vergangenen Jahr in New York einen unglaublichen Triumph gefeiert hatte. Raducanu war die erste Qualifikantin, die in der Open Era des Tennis (seit 1968) ein Grand-Slam-Turnier gewinnen konnte.
Serena Williams hatte am vergangenen Dienstag in einem Gastbeitrag für die Zeitschrift Vogue angekündigt, ihre Karriere nach 27 Jahren bald beenden zu wollen. Vieles deutet darauf hin, dass die US Open (ab 29. August) ihr letzter großer Auftritt werden. Cincinnati dürfte ihr letztes Vorbereitungsturnier vor dem großen Abschied sein. Beim Turnier in Ohio hatte sie 2014 und 2015 zwei ihrer bislang 73 Turniersiege gefeiert.
