Griner-Prozess: Russischer Diplomat bestätigt Verhandlungen
Die in Russland wegen Drogenschmuggels zu neun Jahren Haft verurteilte US-Basketballerin Brittney Griner darf sich Hoffnungen auf eine Rückkehr in ihre Heimat machen. Ein russischer Diplomat hat am Samstag bestätigt, dass Russland und die USA Verhandlungen über einen Austausch der 31-Jährigen begonnen hätten. Ein Modell war, dass im Gegenzug zur Freilassung von Griner und dem Autoteilehändler Paul Whelan der russische Waffenhändler Viktor Bout in seine Heimat zurückkehren könnte, der in einem US-Gefängnis einsitzt.
"Die Gespräche über das sehr heikle Thema des Austauschs von Gefangenen finden auf von unseren Präsidenten gewählten Kanälen statt", erklärte der Direktor der Nordamerika-Abteilung im russischen Außenministerium, Alexander Darttschiew, der staatlichen Nachrichtenagentur TASS. Die stille Diplomatie gehe weiter und "sollte Früchte tragen, wenn Washington natürlich darauf achtet, nicht in Propaganda zu verfallen", fügte er hinzu.
Griner musste sich seit Prozessbeginn am 1. Juli wegen Verstößen gegen Drogengesetze verantworten, sie war am Moskauer Flughafen Scheremetjewo nach ihrer Ankunft aus den USA festgenommen worden, nachdem Sicherheitskräfte in ihrem Gepäck Vape-Kartuschen mit Cannabis-Öl gefunden hatten. Griner hatte sich zu Beginn des Gerichtsverfahrens zwar schuldig bekannt, absichtlichen Drogenschmuggel aber bestritten. Der Stoff ist in Russland auch für medizinische Zwecke verboten.
