Der Deutschland-Achter startet nach der enttäuschenden Ruder-WM mit großen Corona-Problemen beim Saisonabschluss. Neun WM-Teilnehmer aus dem Team wiesen nach den Titelkämpfen ein positives Ergebnis auf und fallen beim SH Netz Cup am Sonntag (13.10 Uhr/NDR) über 12,7 km in Rendsburg aus. Julian Garth war zudem bereits in Racice/Tschechien positiv getestet worden.
"Wir testen seit der Rückkehr aus Tschechien – und es kam im Laufe der Woche eine Absage nach der anderen", sagte Trainer Peter Thiede. Er ersetzt Bundestrainer Uwe Bender, der aufgrund von leichten Symptomen aus Vorsichtsgründen absagen musste.
Schlagmann Torben Johannesen, Mattes Schönherr, Benedict Eggeling und Steuermann Jonas Wiesen sind die einzig verbliebenen Ruderer aus dem Achter, der bei der WM das Finale verpasst hatte. "Wir sind froh, dass wir überhaupt starten können, und wollen aus der Situation das Beste machen", sagte Thiede. Gegner sind die Achter aus den Niederlanden, den USA und der Ukraine.
