Die Zahl der Todesopfer nach den gewaltsamen Ausschreitungen bei einem Fußballspiel in Indonesien ist Behördenangaben vom Sonntag zufolge auf 174 gestiegen. Demnach sind 180 weitere Menschen verletzt worden, als am Samstag in dem Stadion in Malang in der indonesischen Provinz Ostjava eine Massenpanik ausbrach.
Der Polizei zufolge hatten wütende Fans das Fußballfeld gestürmt, nachdem ihr Verein des Arema FC das Spiel gegen den Erzrivalen Persebaya Surabaya 2:3 verloren hatte - die erste Niederlage seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten. Die Polizei versuchte daraufhin nach eigenen Angaben, die Fans zur Rückkehr auf die Ränge zu bewegen und feuerte schließlich Tränengas in die Menge. Dies löste laut Polizei eine Massenpanik aus. Demnach wurden viele der Opfer zu Tode getrampelt oder erstickten.
Der Vize-Gouverneur der Provinz Ostjava bezifferte die Anzahl der Todesopfer im Sender Kompas TV am Sonntagmorgen auf mindestens 174.
Der indonesische Präsident Joko Widodo ordnete eine Sicherheitsüberprüfung der Fußballspiele des Landes an. Der Sport- und Jugendminister des Landes, der nationale Polizeichef und der Chef des indonesischen Fußballverbandes wurden angewiesen, "eine gründliche Bewertung der Fußballspiele und der Sicherheitsverfahren vorzunehmen", sagte Widodo in einer im Fernsehen übertragenen Erklärung.
