IEA: Kohleverbrauch wird 2022 weltweit neuen Höchstwert erreichen
Der klimaschädliche Verbrauch von Kohle wird nach Einschätzung der Internationalen Energie-Agentur (IEA) dieses Jahr weltweit einen neuen Höchstwert erreichen. Der Gesamtverbrauch werde vor allem wegen der erhöhten Nachfrage in Europa um 1,2 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr auf mehr als acht Milliarden Tonnen ansteigen, heißt es in einem am Freitag veröffentlichten Bericht der Agentur.
Bis etwa 2025 werde der Verbrauch etwa auf diesem Niveau bleiben, wenn es keine weiteren Anstrengungen gebe, die Energiewende voranzutreiben, warnte die IEA. Der Verbrauch von Kohle ist die Hauptquelle für den Ausstoß des klimaschädlichen CO2. Auch wenn die Nachfrage in den Industrieländern sinke, gebe es weiter einen massiven Bedarf in Asien, so die Agentur.
"Die Welt steht vor dem Höhepunkt des Verbrauchs fossiler Brennstoffe, aber noch sind wir nicht angekommen", betonte Keisuke Sadamori von der IEA. In diesem Jahr braucht vor allem Europa viel Kohle, um Strom zu produzieren. Es ist das zweite Jahr in Folge, dass in Europa der Kohleverbrauch steigt. Die Krise befördert aber auch erneuerbare Energien und Energie-Effizienz, etwa den Einsatz von Wärmepumpen.
In China, das für 53 Prozent des weltweiten Kohleverbrauchs steht, war der Verbrauch wegen der Corona-Krise in diesem Jahr gebremst. Hitzewellen und Trockenheit steigerten auf der anderen Seite den Verbrauch, weil Strom für Klimaanlagen gebraucht wurde und es weniger Wasserkraft gab. Die drei größten Kohleproduzenten China, Indien und Indonesien haben alle drei ihre bisherigen Produktionsrekorde überschritten.
Der IEA-Bericht weist allerdings auch darauf hin, dass derzeit keine größeren Investitionen mehr in Projekte zum Kohleexport fließen. "Das zeigt die Vorsicht der Investoren mit Blick auf die mittel- und langfristigen Perspektiven von Kohle."
