Erster öffentlicher Besuch von israelischer Delegation in Saudi-Arabien
In Saudi-Arabien ist erstmals in der Geschichte beider Länder eine offiziell angekündigte israelische Delegation eingetroffen. "Wir sind glücklich hier zu sein - es ist ein guter erster Schritt", sagte ein israelischer Vertreter der Nachrichtenagentur AFP am Montag am Rande der Jahreskonferenz des Unesco-Welterbekomitees in Riad.
Der Besuch fällt in eine Zeit, in der über eine Normalisierung der Beziehungen beider Länder spekuliert wird. Saudi-Arabien erkennt Israel getreu der Position der Arabischen Liga wegen des Konflikts mit den Palästinensern offiziell nicht an und ist nicht Teil des 2020 von den USA vermittelten Abraham-Abkommens, mit dem Riads Nachbarn Bahrain und die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate Beziehungen zu Israel aufbauten.
Die fünfköpfige Delegation reiste nach Angaben des israelischen Vertreters, der nicht namentlich genannt werden wollte, über Dubai, weil es keine direkten Flüge zwischen Israel und Saudi-Arabien gibt. Ihre Visa erhielten die Delegationsmitglieder über die Unesco.
