Totale Sonnenfinsternis in Nordamerika
Nordamerika steht am Montag eine totale Sonnenfinsternis bevor. Millionen Menschen in den USA, in Kanada und im Westen Mexikos werden am Nachmittag gegen 15.30 Uhr US-Ostküstenzeit (21.30 MESZ) gebannt in den Himmel blicken, um das seltene Spektakel zu beobachten. Das Gebiet, von dem aus die vollständige Verdunkelung der Sonne zu sehen ist, ist rund 185 Kilometer breit, in ihm befinden sich unter anderem die US-Großstädte Dallas, Indianapolis und Buffalo.
Zuletzt hatten die Menschen in den USA im Jahr 2017 die Möglichkeit, eine Sonnenfinsternis zu beobachten - allerdings von einem kleineren Gebiet aus als diesmal. Rund 32 Millionen Menschen leben an Orten, von denen aus die Verdunkelung am Montag zu sehen ist, weitere 150 Millionen in einem Umkreis von 320 Kilometern. Im betroffenen Gebiet sind Hotelzimmer größtenteils seit Monaten ausgebucht, die US-Fluggesellschaft Delta bietet zudem Sonderflüge an, von denen aus die Passagiere einen exklusiven Blick auf die schwarz bedeckte Sonne erhalten.
