Heidelberg ernennt Königin Silvia von Schweden zur Ehrenbürgerin
Die Stadt Heidelberg hat Königin Silvia von Schweden zur Ehrenbürgerin ernannt. Oberbürgermeister Eckart Würzner wird ihr die Auszeichnung bei einem Festakt im Rathaus am 26. Mai übergeben, wie die Stadt am Mittwochabend mitteilte. Die in Heidelberg geborene Königin erhalte die Auszeichnung für ihre "vielfältigen Verdienste". Sie engagiere sich seit Jahrzehnten für ihre Mitmenschen.
Als Beispiel dafür nannte die Stadt die unter anderem von Königin Silvia gegründete World Childhood Foundation, die Kinder weltweit vor Gewalt und sexuellem Missbrauch schütze. 2019 habe Königin Silvia eine Einrichtung der Organisation in Heidelberg eröffnet. Sie sei eine "herausragende internationale Botschafterin ihrer Heimatstadt", hieß es weiter zur Begründung.
Die 79-Jährige wurde wurde 1943 als Silvia Renate Sommerlath in Heidelberg geboren. Zwischen 1947 und 1957 lebte sie mit ihrer Familie in Sao Paolo in Brasilien, bevor sie 1957 nach Heidelberg zurückkehrte. 1972 lernte sie als Chef-Hostess der Olympischen Spiele in München König Carl XVI. Gustaf von Schweden kennen. Das Paar heiratete rund vier Jahre später.
