Peru richtet neues Meeresschutzgebiet ein
Peru hat an seiner Nordküste an der Grenze zu Ecuador ein 1160 Quadratkilometer großes Meeresschutzgebiet eingerichtet. In dem Schutzgebiet Mar Tropical de Grau vor den Regionen Tumbes und Piura lebten zahlreiche Arten, erklärte die Regierung in Lima am Donnerstag. Außerdem gehörten Unterwasser-Berge und die einzigen Korallenriffe in peruanischen Gewässern dazu. Durch das neue Schutzgebiet ziehen auch Buckelwale.
Nach Angaben von Umweltminister Juan Carlos Castro handelt es sich um Perus zweites Meeresschutzgebiet, nachdem 2021 das gut 62.000 Quadratkilometer große Schutzgebiet Dorsal de Nasca eingerichtet worden war. Mar Tropical de Grau macht demnach 0,14 Prozent der peruanischen Gewässer im Pazifik aus.
Für die Einrichtung des neuen Schutzgebiets hatten sich Umweltschützer bereits seit einem Jahrzehnt eingesetzt. Nach Angaben der daran beteiligten Organisation Naturaleza y Cultura Internacional hinkt Peru in puncto Meeresschutzgebieten seinen Nachbarländern Kolumbien und Ecuador hinterher.
