Scheidender US-Gesandter Kerry will sich weiter gegen Klimawandel einsetzen
Der erfahrene US-Diplomat John Kerry will sich auch nach seinem Ausscheiden aus dem Amt des US-Klimagesandten für den Kampf gegen den Klimawandel einsetzen. "Jetzt müssen wir dafür sorgen, dass der Privatsektor wirklich aktiv wird", sagte Kerry der Nachrichtenagentur AFP am Mittwoch am Rande des Weltwirtschaftsforums im Schweizer Alpenort Davos. Bei der Weltklimakonferenz (COP28) in Dubai sei im Dezember "ein großartiges Ergebnis erzielt" worden, sagte er und sprach von einem "Wendepunkt".
US-Präsident Joe Biden hatte Kerry bei seinem Amtsantritt Anfang 2021 zum ersten Sondergesandten für Klimafragen auf Kabinettsebene ernannt. Der frühere Außenminister, Senator und demokratische Präsidentschaftskandidat des Jahres 2004 vertrat die USA bei drei Weltklimagipfeln.
Kerry versuchte unter anderem, China trotz der angespannten Beziehungen zu den USA zu einer Zusammenarbeit im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel zu bewegen, und konnte dabei einige Erfolge vorweisen. Der 80-jährige Kerry will sich jetzt für die Wiederwahl von Biden engagieren.
