Mindestens 15.000 Menschen sind nach Angaben der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) seit Jahresbeginn an den Folgen der schweren Hitzewellen in Europa gestorben. Darunter seien etwa 4500 Todesfälle in Deutschland, fast 4000 in Spanien und mehr als 3200 in Großbritannien, erklärte WHO-Regionaldirektor Hans Kluge am Montag. Es werde ein weiterer Anstieg der Zahl erwartet, wenn noch mehr Länder ihre hitzebedingten Todesfälle melden.
Die drei Monate von Juni bis August waren in Europa die heißesten seit Beginn der Wetteraufzeichnungen. Die außergewöhnlich hohen Temperaturen führten zur schwersten Dürre, die der Kontinent seit dem Mittelalter erlebte.
"Der Klimawandel bringt uns schon jetzt um, aber ein starkes Handeln heute kann weitere Todesfälle verhindern", erklärte die WHO, während sich die Weltgemeinschaft zur 27. Weltklimakonferenz im ägyptischen Scharm el-Scheich traf. Nach einem UN-Bericht der vergangenen Woche ist Europa der sich am schnellsten erwärmende Kontinent. Er verzeichnete über die vergangenen 30 Jahre einen fast zwei Mal so hohen Temperaturanstieg wie der weltweite Durchschnitt.
