Zehntausende feiern Beginn des Straßenkarnevals trotz teils strömenden Regens
Bei teils strömendem Regen haben am Donnerstag zehntausende Menschen in Köln, Düsseldorf und Mainz den Beginn des rheinischen Straßenkarnevals gefeiert. Pünktlich um 11:11 Uhr wurde in den drei großen Hochburgen des närrischen Treibens mit Alaaf und Helau mit der Weiberfastnacht die heiße Phase des Karnevals eingeläutet. Die Polizei war überall mit einem Großaufgebot im Einsatz.
In Köln, wo der Karneval dieses Jahr unter dem Motto "Wat e Theater – Wat e Jeckespill" steht, waren zentrale Plätze und Straßen in der Innenstadt trotz Regens gut mit Feiernden gefüllt. Viele Karnevalisten schunkelten mit Regenponcho, Schirm und Kapuze durch die nordrhein-westfälische Domstadt.
Auch im benachbarten Düsseldorf trotzten Karnevalisten dem Schmuddelwetter. Dort stürmten die "Möhnen" traditionell das Rathaus der Landeshauptstadt. Im rheinland-pfälzischen Mainz versammelten sich zahlreiche Karnevalisten der Tradition entsprechend am Fastnachtsbrunnen auf dem Schillerplatz.
