Brasilien versenkt ungeachtet von Protesten maroden Flugzeugträger im Atlantik
Ungeachtet der Proteste von Umweltschützern hat Brasilien einen höchst maroden früheren Flugzeugträger im Atlantik versenkt. Das sechs Jahrzehnte alte Kriegsschiff sei am Freitagnachmittag (Ortszeit) etwa 350 Kilometer vor der Küste des Landes "kontrolliert" versenkt worden, teilte die brasilianische Marine mit. An dem ausgewählten Ort betrage die Meerestiefe rund 5000 Meter.
Das frühere Kriegsschiff war zuvor monatelang im Atlantik herumgeirrt. Die Ankündigung Brasiliens, es zu versenken, hatte zu heftigen Protesten geführt. Umweltorganisationen sprachen von einem "Umweltvergehen". Robin Wood bezeichnete den ehemaligen Flugzeugträger als "30.000 Tonnen schweres Giftpaket".
Das Schiff stand unter dem Namen "Foch" 37 Jahre lang in den Diensten der französischen Marine. Im Jahr 2000 wurde es von Brasilien gekauft und in "São Paulo" umbenannt. Das Schiff bereitete bald Probleme, seine Modernisierung wäre jedoch zu teuer gewesen - zumal ein Brand im Jahr 2005 seinen Zustand weiter verschlechterte. Brasilien beschloss, das Schiff loszuwerden. Als das nicht gelang, entschieden sich die Behörden, es zu versenken.
