Höchste Zahl an Waldbränden im Amazonas-Gebiet binnen 24 Stunden seit fast 15 Jahren
Die Zahl der Waldbrände im brasilianischen Amazonas-Gebiet hat in dieser Woche nach offiziellen Daten den höchsten Stand seit fast 15 Jahren erreicht. Wie die brasilianische Weltraumbehörde Inpe am Donnerstag unter Berufung auf Satellitenbilder mitteilte, wurden am vergangenen Montag 3358 Brände in der Regenwaldregion gezählt. Das ist die höchste Zahl an Waldbränden im Amazonas-Gebiet innerhalb von 24 Stunden seit dem September 2007.
Es gebe keinen Hinweis darauf, dass die Brände am Montag koordiniert wurden, erklärte der Leiter des Inpe-Brandüberwachungsprogramms, Alberto Setzer. Die Feuer fügten sich ein in ein Muster aus zunehmender Abholzung und Brandrodung.
Fachleuten zufolge werden die meisten Brände im für das Weltklima entscheidenden Amazonas-Gebiet von Landwirten und Spekulanten illegal gelegt. Enorm zugenommen hat dieses Vorgehen seit der Amtsübernahme von Brasiliens rechtsextremen Staatschef Jair Bolsonaro.
Umwelt- und Klimaschützer machen dafür seine wirtschaftsfreundliche Politik verantwortlich und werfen ihm vor, illegale Rodungen zu begünstigen. Seit Bolsonaros Amtsantritt im Januar 2019 ist die durchschnittliche jährliche Abholzung im brasilianischen Amazonas-Gebiet um 75 Prozent im Vergleich zum vorherigen Jahrzehnt gestiegen.
Im Oktober wählen die Brasilianerinnen und Brasilianer einen neuen Präsidenten. Da Bolsonaro zur Wiederwahl antritt, könnte sich die Zerstörung noch beschleunigen, sagte die Leiterin des Amazonas-Umweltforschungsinstituts Ipam, Ane Alencar. "Wir wissen aus früheren Jahren, dass es einen Zusammenhang zwischen Wahlen und Abholzung gibt." Beamte und Strafverfolgungsbehörden seien durch den Wahlkampf abgelenkt, warnte Alencar.
