Neugebauer wird WM-Fünfter - 111 Punkte fehlen zu Bronze
Auch Zehnkämpfer Leo Neugebauer (Leinfelden-Echterdingen) hat die erhoffte erste Medaille für das deutsche Team bei der Leichtathletik-WM in Budapest verpasst. Der 23-Jährige wurde beim Triumph von Pierce Lepage (Kanada) mit 8645 Punkten Fünfter, nach dem ersten Tag hatte Neugebauer noch geführt. Am Ende fehlten dem College-Studenten 111 Zähler zu Bronze.
Lepage krönte sich mit starken 8909 Punkten zum neuen "König der Athleten" vor seinem Landsmann und Olympiasieger Damian Warner (8804), Bronze sicherte sich Lindon Victor (8756/Grenada).
Manuel Eitel (8191/Ulm) reihte sich auf Platz elf ein, Europameister Niklas Kaul (Mainz) hatte den Zehnkampf wegen Fußproblemen nach dem Hochsprung abbrechen müssen.
Neugebauer hatte im Juni den alten deutschen Rekord von Jürgen Hingsen auf 8836 Punkte verbessert und war als Nummer eins der Welt nach Budapest gereist, lange lag er auf Medaillenkurs - doch nun geht das Warten auf den ersten großen Erfolg im deutschen Team weiter. Am Sonntag hat Julian Weber (Speerwurf) zum Abschluss der WM noch gute Chancen.
