Angels drop Suzuki as manager after club's worst MLB season
Kurt Suzuki will not be retained as manager of the Los Angeles Angels after the first 100-loss campaign in club history, the Major League Baseball team announced on Wednesday.
At 62-100 in his first season as an MLB manager, the 43-year-old Suzuki oversaw the worst record in the American League and second-worst in MLB.
Suzuki, who ended his 16-year career as a catcher with the Angels in 2022 before serving as a special assistant to the general manager for two seasons, took over as manager a year ago.
The Angels' new ownership group, Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, is set to complete a purchase deal for the team in early 2027.
"As we look toward 2027 and beyond, I've had thoughtful conversations internally and with Kroenke Sports and Entertainment's leadership about the future of Angels Baseball and the direction of our organization," interim general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement.
"Those conversations have shaped the decision to seek a new manager and coaching staff for the 2027 season."
Suzuki was offered the chance to return to a special assistant role.
"Kurt has earned tremendous respect in our clubhouse, and I've seen firsthand how much he cares about our players," Mozeliak said. "I do not believe our record this year was a true reflection of his abilities as a manager."
Mozeliak's status remains uncertain beyond the conclusion of his contract in December.
