Zyklon "Jasper" wütet in Touristenorten an Nordostküste Australiens
Der Zyklon "Jasper" hat am Mittwoch mit Windgeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 113 Stundenkilometern Touristenorte an der Nordostküste Australiens erreicht. Rund 15.000 Haushalte an der Küste waren nach offiziellen Angaben ohne Strom. Der australische Wetterdienst warnte vor "zerstörerischen Windböen" und "lebensbedrohlichen" Überschwemmungen infolge heftiger Regenfälle.
Der Zyklon der zweitstärksten Kategorie zwei traf nahe der Ortschaft Wujal Wujal in der Nähe der Stadt Cairns im Bundesstaat Queensland auf Land. Im nahegelegenen Urlaubsort Palm Cove waren Restaurants und Hotels geschlossen, die Inhaber hatten Türen und Fenster verrammelt und Sandsäcke aufgetürmt. Auf der Strandpromenade stapelten sich abgerissene Äste, der Wind zerrte an Palmen.
Betroffen waren auch die Touristenstädte Cairns und Port Douglas, die beliebte Ausgangspunkte für Ausflüge zum weltberühmten Great Barrier Reef sind. Der stellvertretende Regierungschef von Queensland, Steven Miles, warnte, die "gefährlichen und lebensbedrohlichen" Überschwemmungen könnten "noch Tage" andauern.
