Tennessee is moving closer to placing Dolly Parton's name on Nashville International Airport as state leaders seek a permanent public tribute to the country music icon following her death at age 80.

Gov. Bill Lee has expressed support for renaming the airport for Parton, adding momentum to an idea that gained public attention after her death.

The proposal would attach the name of one of Tennessee's most internationally recognized cultural figures to the state's principal commercial airport in Nashville, the center of the country music industry.

Parton's career stretched across decades and included songwriting, recording, film, television and business ventures. Her connection to Tennessee remained central to her public identity, from her upbringing in the Smoky Mountains to Dollywood and other projects in the state.

She was also known for philanthropy, including literacy initiatives and support for communities affected by disasters and economic hardship. Those activities have become part of the public discussion over how Tennessee should commemorate her.

Renaming a major airport requires more than expressions of support from elected officials. The Nashville airport's governing authority and other relevant bodies would have roles in approving and implementing a formal change.

Supporters see an airport naming as a highly visible tribute that would introduce visitors to Parton's association with Tennessee immediately upon arrival in Nashville.
