Australiens größter Energieproduzent steigt deutlich früher aus der Kohle aus
Der australische Energieriese AGL, der größte CO2-Emittent des Landes, will deutlich früher aus der klimaschädlichen Kohle aussteigen als bislang geplant. Der Betrieb seines letzten Kohlekraftwerks Loy Yang A im Bundesstaat Victoria werde bis Mitte 2035 eingestellt und damit ein Jahrzehnt früher als ursprünglich geplant, teilte AGL am Donnerstag mit. Die geplante Schließung sei "eine der bedeutendsten Dekarbonisierungsinitiativen in Australien", erklärte AGL-Vorstand Patricia McKenzie.
AGL ist Australiens größter Energieanbieter, ihm gehören drei der größten Kohlekraftwerke des Landes. Zuletzt hatten Umweltorganisationen, aber auch Aktionäre großen Druck auf AGL ausgeübt, Maßnahmen für eine Beschleunigung der klimafreundlichen Energiewende zu ergreifen. Ausschlaggebend dürfte der größte AGL-Aktionär Mike Cannon-Brookes gewesen sein, der sich für den Umweltschutz stark macht.
Der Energie-Experte Greg Bourne sagte der Nachrichtenagentur AFP, es gebe zwei wesentliche Gründe, warum der Energiesektor sich von der Kohle abwende. Zum einen habe Australien nun eine klimafreundlichere Regierung unter Labor-Chef Anthony Albanese, zum anderen sei Kohlestrom "kein kommerziell existenzfähiger" Wirtschaftssektor mehr.
