US-Vizepräsidentin Harris zu Besuch in Südkorea eingetroffen
US-Vizepräsidentin Kamala Harris ist zu einem Besuch in Südkorea eingetroffen. Nach einem Besuch in Japan, wo sie am Staatsbegräbnis für den ermordeten Ex-Regierungschef Shinzo Abe teilgenommen hatte, landete Harris am Donnerstag auf dem US-Luftwaffenstützpunkt im südkoreanischen Osan. Harris will Südkoreas Präsident Yoon Suk Yeol treffen und die stark gesicherte Demilitarisierte Zone (DMZ) zwischen Süd- und Nordkorea besuchen.
Nordkorea hatte in den vergangenen Tagen zwei Raketentests vorgenommen, einen am Sonntag und einen am Mittwoch. Vor ihrer Abreise in Japan hatte Harris Nordkoreas "illegales Waffenprogramm" verurteilt und dem Land vorgeworfen, mit den Raketenstarts die Region zu destabilisieren.
Pjöngjang hat seit Jahresbeginn schon eine ganze Serie von Waffentests vorgenommen, darunter auch mit einer Interkontinentalrakete. Südkorea und die USA befürchten, dass Pjöngjang auch einen Atomwaffentest vorbereitet. Es wäre der erste solche Test seit 2017. Insgesamt hat Nordkorea seit 2006 sechs Atomwaffentests ausgeführt.
Washington und Seoul sind enge Verbündete. In Südkorea sind rund 28.500 US-Soldaten stationiert. In dieser Woche halten die südkoreanische und die US-Marine eine großangelegte gemeinsame Militärübung ab.
