Wasmeier zu Winterspielen in Saudi-Arabien: "Nichts gelernt"
Der ehemalige Ski-Olympiasieger Markus Wasmeier hat mit Unverständnis auf die Vergabe der Asien-Winterspiele 2029 nach Saudi-Arabien reagiert. "Es ist wirklich erschreckend. Man hat anscheinend nichts gelernt", sagte der 59-Jährige dem SID: "Es ist wirklich sehr skurril, was da abläuft".
Es sei, so Wasmeier, "einfach der Wahnsinn, wie man es schafft, so ein Thema noch als nachhaltig zu betrachten". Das asiatische Olympia-Komitee hatte das umstrittene Milliarden-Projekt am Dienstag abgesegnet, Kritik an der Vergabe kam auch aus der Politik. "Die Vergabe wirkt absurd", sagte Philipp Hartewig, sportpolitischer Sprecher der FDP, auf SID-Anfrage: "Die Austragung in Saudi-Arabien ist insbesondere in diesen schweren Zeiten nur schwer denkbar."
"Im gleichen Zusammenhang ist es fragwürdig, wie und ob der Nachhaltigkeitsgedanke voll ausgelebt werden kann", so Hartewig weiter: "In Saudi-Arabien herrschen zwar auch Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt, aber schneesicher ist es keineswegs."
Die asiatischen Winterspiele fanden zuletzt 2017 statt. Saudi-Arabien hatte 2022 in Peking erstmals an Olympischen Winterspielen teilgenommen, der alpine Skiläufer Fayik Abdi war einziger Starter und wurde 44. im Riesenslalom. "Ich hatte mir nie vorgestellt, dass ich einmal im meinem Heimatland Ski fahren könnte", sagte er am Dienstag.
