Ägyptische Archäologen melden Fund von "vollständiger Stadt" aus der Römerzeit
Ägyptische Archäologen haben nach eigenen Angaben im Zentrum von Luxor eine rund 1800 Jahre alte "vollständige Stadt aus der Römerzeit" entdeckt. Es handle sich um die "älteste und bedeutendste Stadt", die am Ostufer des Nils entdeckt wurde, erklärte der Leiter des Obersten Antikenrats, Mustafa Wasiri, am Dienstag.
Die Archäologen hätten bereits mehrere Wohngebäude, zwei Türme zur Unterbringung von Tauben sowie eine Reihe von Werkstätten zur Metallverarbeitung mitsamt Werkzeugen und römischen Kupfer- und Bronzemünzen ausgegraben. "Und die Ausgrabungen gehen weiter", sagte Wasiri.
Ägypten präsentierte in den vergangenen Monaten eine Reihe spektakulärer archäologischer Funde, vor allem in der weitläufigen Sakkara-Nekropole südlich von Kairo. Die Behörden hoffen, mit den Entdeckungen den seit Jahren angeschlagenen Tourismus wieder anzukurbeln. Kritiker werfen den Behörden vor, spektakuläre Ausgrabungen mühsamer und weniger öffentlichkeitswirksamer Forschung vorzuziehen.
