ESC-Kommentator Peter Urban tritt nach diesjährigem Finale im Mai ab
Der als Kommentator des Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Deutschland zur Institution gewordene Peter Urban wird im Mai zum letzten Mal ein ESC-Finale für die ARD begleiten. Wie der Norddeutsche Rundfunk (NDR) am Mittwoch in Hamburg mitteilte, wird der 74 Jahre alte Urban am 13. Mai aus Liverpool zum 25. Mal ein ESC-Finale kommentieren und danach Abschied nehmen.
Urban wurde durch seine humorvolle Art der Kommentierung des weltweit am meisten beachteten Musikwettbewerbs für die ARD bekannt. Dadurch gab er der Fernsehsendung in Deutschland eine eigene Note. Erstmals hatte Urban 1997 in Dublin den ESC kommentiert und blieb der Sendung auch nach dem Erreichen des Ruhestands erhalten.
Der NDR zitierte Urban mit den Worten: "Seit 1997 habe ich erlebt, wie stark der ESC an Bedeutung, Aktualität, Vielfalt und Qualität gewonnen hat, habe mich bemüht, den Wandel vom traditionellen Grand Prix zum weltweiten Topevent der internationalen Musikszene den deutschen Zuschauern nahe zu bringen, mal informativ und sachlich, mal emotional und mit leiser oder lauterer Ironie." Er hoffe, dass er auch in Jahren mit schwächeren deutschen Ergebnissen geholfen habe, das Interesse an der einzigartigen Veranstaltung hochzuhalten.
NDR-Programmdirektor Frank Beckmann erklärte, Urbans Kommentare über die ESC-Beiträge seien "aufschlussreich, kenntnisreich, trocken, auf den Punkt - und Kult". Ihm gelinge "es, kein Blatt vor den Mund zu nehmen und zugleich wohlwollend und respektvoll zu kommentieren".
