New Zealand 17-1 at lunch in rain-hit West Indies Test
Kane Williamson had a quick return to Test cricket Tuesday as New Zealand reached 17-1 at lunch in a rain-interrupted opening session of the first Test against the West Indies in Christchurch.
Visiting captain Roston Chase won the toss and chose to bowl in ideal conditions for the quick bowlers, with a green-tinged surface and heavy cloud cover.
The decision paid immediate dividends when Kemar Roach removed Devon Conway third ball with a ball seaming away caught by Justin Greaves at second slip.
It brought Williamson to the crease in the opening over for his first Test innings for a year.
He was 13 not out at lunch with Tom Latham on one after almost 90 minutes of the session were lost to the weather.
The rain set in during the fourth over and when play resumed only a further six overs were possible before a second rain break ended the session.
It is New Zealand's first match in the new World Test Championship. The West Indies have already played five, losing 3-0 to Australia at home and 2-0 in India.
