British buyers pay substantial premiums for period-home appearance
Estate agents say demand for Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian homes is pushing some buyers to pay far more for exterior character even when newer properties provide greater space.
In one comparison from Twickenham, a three-bedroom Victorian house with 151.6 square metres sold for £1.275 million in November 2025, while a nearby five-bedroom home built between 1950 and 1966, with 166.4 square metres, was valued at about £675,000.
Agents attribute the premium to kerb appeal, neighbourhood reputation, original architectural details, social-media imagery and the association of period streets with schools and local amenities. Renovation culture has also encouraged buyers to combine historic façades with modern kitchens, extensions and loft conversions.
Newer homes can offer squarer rooms, more light, driveways, gardens and layouts better suited to current family life. Older buildings may also require costly alterations and maintenance, meaning the aesthetic premium does not necessarily reflect practical value.
