Opener Chanderpaul, who has been dropped twice, was unbeaten on 25 with Hope on 33.

The pair came together in the 11th over with the West Indies in early trouble at 10-2 in reply to New Zealand's 231.

The New Zealand first innings lasted only three balls at the start of the day without addition to their overnight score.

Zak Foulkes, the last wicket to fall, was immediately in the action when the West Indies innings began.

The 23-year-old swing specialist, playing just his second Test, removed John Campbell for one with his first delivery.

Will Young completed the dismissal with a smart one-handed catch to his left at third slip, but then dropped a regulation chance when Alick Athanaze on four, edged Matt Henry.

However, the scoreboard had not moved before Henry bowled Athanaze in his following over with a ball that nipped back sharply to have the West Indies 10-2.

Captain Tom Latham took the gloves for New Zealand with regular keeper Tom Blundell sidelined by a hamstring strain sustained during his 29-run innings the previous day.

Daryl Mitchell, kept out of the Test by a groin injury, fielded in place of Blundell under what a New Zealand cricket spokesman called a "managed environment" to keep his workload light.
